How Much Does a Cat Trap Rental Cost? $0 to $17 in Fees, $50 to $113 in Deposits, and How People Lose Them

Almost every spay and neuter clinic that takes community cats insists they arrive in a humane live trap, and most people do not own one. The usual fix is to borrow one, and the price of borrowing is rarely the rental itself. Published programs run from free with a deposit to a $17 fee on top of a $113 deposit, and the money that actually goes missing is usually the deposit. This guide lines up five organizations' own pages so you can see how each one prices a trap.

None of these figures is a national rate. Each comes from one city or nonprofit, and terms change, so use them as examples and confirm the current policy with whoever lends you the trap.

Deposit first, rental fee second. A trap loan has two possible charges. The deposit is held while the trap is out and returned when the trap comes back clean and working. The rental fee, where there is one, is a separate and smaller charge for the days you keep it. Three of the five programs below charge no rental fee at all, which is why the deposit is the number to compare.

Palmetto Bay, Florida: free for ten days, $50 deposit

The Village of Palmetto Bay's rental agreement says its Department of Public Services lends humane, non-lethal cat traps for a ten-day rental. The rental is free, with a $50 refundable deposit paid in cash or by credit card. The deposit comes back when the trap is returned cleaned and in good working order. It is not refunded for a lost, damaged or stolen trap, and the renter may also be billed the cost of replacing a trap that is destroyed by something other than regular use.

Cache Humane Society: free rental, $100 deposit

Cache Humane Society says trap rentals are free but need a fully refundable $100 deposit by check or credit card. Traps must come back clean and undamaged for the full refund. The clinic adds that it cannot take feral cats for surgery unless they arrive in a humane feral trap, so the trap and the appointment go together.

Critters Without Litters: $75 deposit for two weeks

Critters Without Litters asks for a $75 deposit, fully refundable if the trap is returned clean and in good working order. The rental period is two weeks, and returning the trap late or dirty may cost you the deposit. You sign a rental agreement, leave the deposit and take the trap with you. The program's own guidance also notes that the small two-pack traps sold at feed stores, about 7 by 7 by 24 inches, are meant for squirrels or gophers and are not accepted for cats.

Humane Ohio: $80 ahead of time, $100 plus $15 on the day

Humane Ohio's 2026 policy splits the price by timing. Renting ahead costs an $80 deposit in cash or check, refunded when the trap is returned. Renting the same day as the appointment raises the deposit to $100 and adds a $15 transfer fee, paid in cash or by card, which the page says is charged per cat. Traps must be back within 30 days or the deposit is forfeited, the limit is three traps per person or household, and rentals are only for people with a pending appointment. So a same-day rental for one cat is $100 held plus $15 spent, which is $115 out of pocket on the day (my arithmetic).

San Antonio Humane Society: $17 for ten days plus a $113 deposit

San Antonio Humane Society is the one program here that charges a real rental fee. It lists $17.00 for ten days, with a $113 deposit refundable on return. Together that is $130 at the counter, of which $113 comes back if nothing goes wrong (my arithmetic).

Side by side

  • Palmetto Bay, FL: $0 rental, $50 deposit, 10 days.
  • Cache Humane Society: $0 rental, $100 deposit.
  • Critters Without Litters: $75 deposit, 2 weeks.
  • Humane Ohio: $80 deposit ahead, or $100 plus $15 transfer fee same day; 30 days.
  • San Antonio Humane Society, TX: $17 rental plus $113 deposit, 10 days.

Deposits range from $50 to $113, and the only non-refundable charges listed are the $17 rental and the $15 same-day fee.

How people lose the deposit

The same few rules recur. Return the trap clean, return it working, and return it inside the rental window. Palmetto Bay also lists a lost or stolen trap, and Humane Ohio forfeits the deposit if cats are transferred in a customer's vehicle or parking lot. Asking for the return deadline in writing, and photographing the trap when you pick it up, costs nothing.

The costs around the trap

The trap is only the first line of a community-cat bill. The surgery package is the larger one, and trap-neuter-return clinic packages run $25 to $80 per cat. A cat that is not feral may need the full-price surgery instead, covered in what it costs to spay or neuter a cat. If you plan to keep a cat you trapped, microchipping and cat vaccinations are the next bills, and a city may also ask for a cat license.

What to ask before you take a trap

  • How much is the deposit, and is any part of it a non-refundable fee?
  • How many days do I have, and what happens if I need longer?
  • Do I need a clinic appointment first?
  • What counts as returned in good condition?
  • Is there a limit on traps per person, or a same-day surcharge?

This guide is about costs only, not veterinary advice or legal advice. Figures were taken from the published pages of the Village of Palmetto Bay (FL), Cache Humane Society, Critters Without Litters, Humane Ohio and the San Antonio Humane Society, and can change at any time, so confirm current terms with the lender before paying.
