How Much Does an Uber Pet or Lyft Pet Ride Cost? Lyft's $4 Fee, Uber's Upfront Surcharge and Lyft's $25, $75 and $150 Cleaning Tiers

Getting a pet to the vet, the groomer or a boarding kennel without a car is where rideshare apps come in, and both big ones now sell a pet option. The extra charge is small, but the rules around it are not obvious: one pet only, a requirement to restrain the animal, and cleaning fees that land on your receipt if something goes wrong. This guide uses Lyft's and Uber's own help pages to show what each charges, what each says about messes, and when the add-on is cheaper or more expensive than the alternatives.

Lyft Pet rides: a $4 fee plus tax

Lyft's launch announcement, published August 26, 2024, states that riders pay a $4 fee plus tax, shown inside the upfront price, and that the driver receives the full fee. Lyft's help center describes the mode as fitting up to four people and one well-behaved animal, available only in the U.S. The launch post says one cat or dog is allowed, and that the pet should ride in a carrier, on your lap on a blanket, or at your feet. Lyft's rider help page itself leaves the dollar amount out, so confirm the figure on your own screen before you tap request.

Uber Pet: a surcharge, but no published amount

Uber's help pages say an Uber Pet surcharge is applied when you pick Uber Pet in the app and that it is included in the upfront price. They do not list a dollar figure, so the number you see can differ by city, time and distance. Press coverage at the October 2019 launch put the surcharge at roughly $3 to $5, but that is a launch-era report, not a current Uber rate. Uber's rules are similar to Lyft's: one pet per ride, restrained with a leash or harness or placed in a crate or carrier, with up to three passengers. The practical rule is simple: the number on the upfront quote is the one you owe.

Service animals never pay the pet fee

Both companies exempt service animals. Uber says service animals can ride at all times without extra charge, whether or not it is a pet-friendly trip. Lyft says drivers can opt out of Pet rides but are required to pick up service animals. Pet mode is for ordinary pets, and the fee applies to them.

What a $4 fee does to the total

A flat fee is a bigger share of a short ride. These are hypothetical fares, not quotes. A $12 trip with Lyft's $4 fee becomes $16 before tax and tip, a 33 percent increase. A $25 ride becomes $29, about 16 percent. A $40 ride becomes $44, or 10 percent. A round trip to an appointment pays the fee twice, so two $25 legs cost $58 instead of $50. Our guide on mobile vet house-call costs shows when paying a premium to skip the trip altogether makes sense.

Lyft's cleaning and damage tiers

The larger risk is not the $4 but the mess. Lyft lists three tiers: $25 for minor damage such as small spills, mud, dirt or animal fur; $75 for moderate damage, listed as biowaste outside of the car; and $150 for significant damage, such as large biowaste spills needing specialized cleaning or damage needing repairs. Lyft emails you the ride details and photos and tells you to reply to that email if you want to challenge the charge. A pet that sheds on the seat can trigger the lowest tier by itself.

Uber's cleaning fees

Uber says riders are responsible for damage to the inside or outside of a vehicle, with vomiting and food spills as examples, and that cleaning fees are assessed according to the extent of the damage and paid in full to the driver. Uber's page does not list tier amounts. If you are charged, Uber points riders to Trip Issues and Refunds, then Review my fare or fees, then I was charged a cleaning fee, where you can dispute it. Take a photo of the seat when you get out; a timestamped picture is the simplest evidence you can have.

Ways to keep the ride cheap

A carrier removes most of the shedding and accident risk, and it satisfies both apps' restraint wording. Bring a towel or blanket for the seat. If the trip is long, compare it with a train: Amtrak's pet fare is $29 each way on several routes, and flying has its own fee, covered in our airline pet fee guide. For short outings, a walker or sitter may avoid the trip entirely; see dog walker rates.

Checklist before you request

Confirm the pet option is selected and read the upfront total. Count one pet only. Use a carrier, harness or leash. Photograph the seat afterward. Keep the receipt, because disputes run through the app. Rates, fees and rules change, so the figures above are those published on the companies' pages at the time of writing.

This guide covers costs only. It is not veterinary advice, and it does not tell you whether your pet is fit to travel; ask your veterinarian about your animal's health and any travel needs. Fees and fares vary by city, time and service.
