How Much Does a Vet Recheck Exam Cost? $25 to $50 at Nonprofit Clinics, Plus the $5 Biohazard Fee, $30 Deposits and Other Small Line Items
The exam fee is the number most owners expect on a vet bill. The smaller lines underneath it are the ones that surprise people: a recheck exam, a $5 or $6 biohazard fee, a deposit, a surcharge for an unaltered pet. This guide reads the public fee pages of seven nonprofit and independent clinics on October 19, 2026 and lines those small charges up, so you can ask about them before the invoice arrives.

What a recheck exam is, and what it costs
A recheck is a follow-up visit about a problem the clinic already saw. It is priced below a full exam at every clinic below.
- Madison Cat Project (Wisconsin): $25 recheck, against a $50 wellness exam and a $70 minor medical exam
- Humane Animal Partners (Delaware): $30 recheck, against a $55 standard exam
- Humane Society of Huron Valley (Michigan): $50 recheck, against a $65 wellness exam and a $75 sick exam
- The Neighborhood Vet: $50 recheck, against a $110 standard exam
By my arithmetic the recheck runs from about 45% to 77% of the standard exam price. The Huron Valley page says recheck and vet assistant exams are offered "at vet's discretion," so the doctor decides whether your visit qualifies.
Two visits, not one
A sick cat seen once and rechecked once costs more than the headline exam fee. Using the same pages, that works out to $95 at Madison ($70 + $25), $85 at Humane Animal Partners ($55 + $30), $125 at Huron Valley ($75 + $50) and $160 at The Neighborhood Vet ($110 + $50). Medication and tests are extra in every case. Humane Animal Partners states that its exam fees "do not include any medical treatments, prescriptions, or diagnostic testing."
Technician appointments
Some visits do not need a veterinarian. Madison and Humane Animal Partners both list a $20 technician appointment, and The Neighborhood Vet lists $27 and notes it "does not include price of service performed." Huron Valley lists a $25 vet assistant exam. Ask whether a nail trim, weight check or injection can be booked this way.

The $5 and $6 biohazard fee
Huron Valley lists a $6 biohazard fee. Humane Society of Tampa Bay builds a $5 one into its cat packages: a spay is $105 ($70 surgery, $10 pain medication, $20 rabies vaccine, $5 biohazard) and a neuter is $95 ($60, $10, $20, $5). For a package that is under 5% of the total, which is why it is easy to miss. Our cat spay and neuter cost guide covers the larger price spread.
Deposits and no-show rules
Madison Cat Project requires a $30 deposit per cat, applied toward services. Tampa Bay takes a $25 non-refundable deposit on surgery. Monroe County Humane Association in Bloomington, Indiana asks for prepayment of the exam fee and says that after two or more no-shows the exam fee becomes $50 subsidized or $75 standard. Read the cancellation line before you book.
The unaltered-pet surcharge
Monroe County Humane adds a $20 per visit fee for any unaltered animal over 12 months old, waived with veterinary documentation that the pet is medically unfit for surgery. Three visits cost $60 in surcharges alone, which can exceed the price difference of a low-cost spay or neuter.

Other small items to price
Houston Humane Society lists a $35 office visit next to a $70 exam, and a microchip at $31 or $20 when added to another service. Nail trims run $15 at Madison, $20 in Houston and $25 at Huron Valley. Our vet exam fee guide covers the first-visit charge itself.
Questions to ask at booking
- Is a recheck priced separately, and within how many days does it apply?
- Is there a biohazard, deposit, no-show or intact-pet fee?
- Can a technician appointment cover this visit?
- Will you give me a written prescription so I can compare prices? See filling a pet prescription outside the clinic.
If you pay per service, compare it with a bundle, as in our wellness package versus per-service math.
Fees come from each clinic's public page, were read on October 19, 2026, and change often, so confirm them with the clinic. Madison and Huron Valley list prices for cats; the others list general clinic fees.
