How Much Does Therapy Dog Registration Cost? Pet Partners' $80 Course, $15-$30 Evaluation and $95 Registration Fee

Therapy dog work looks free from the outside: you and your dog visit a hospital or a school and people smile. Getting to the first visit is not free. This guide adds up the fees Pet Partners, a national therapy animal registry, publishes on its own fees page, and what each line pays for.

The three fees Pet Partners lists

Pet Partners breaks the cost of becoming a registered team into three parts: handler education, a team evaluation, and a registration fee. Add them and a new team is looking at roughly $190 to $205 at standard rates, before any local costs such as a vet visit. That total is my arithmetic from the published figures, not a number the organization quotes.

Handler education: $80 online

The online handler course is listed at $80. Pet Partners also offers in-person workshops taught by local instructors, and it says those fees vary with the instructor's expenses for space and materials. If you prefer a classroom, ask the instructor for the price before you sign up.

Team evaluation: usually $15 to $30

The evaluation is where an evaluator watches you and your animal work as a team. Pet Partners says the fee usually runs $15 to $30, and that the exact figure is posted with each event when you schedule or browse the events calendar. The wide range exists because evaluators are local volunteers and organizations, not one central office.

Registration: $95 new, $70 to renew

The standard registration fee for a new team is $95. Renewal is due every two years for each team, and the standard renewal fee is $70. Spread over two years, a renewing team pays about $35 a year to stay registered, again my arithmetic.

Discounts and add-ons

A discounted registration fee of $50 is listed for people who are 55 or older, under 18, members of a Community Partner Group, military or military dependents, or people with a disability. Registering a second animal, or joining as an additional handler for an animal that is already registered, is listed at $30. Renewing teams with certain species, including horses, rabbits, guinea pigs and birds, can qualify for a full renewal waiver.

Costs that are not on the fee page

The fee page does not include the things you pay elsewhere. Your dog may need a vet checkup, and a groomer visit before evaluation day is common. If your dog needs polish first, here is what training classes cost. Travel to the evaluation and parking at facilities are yours too.

Therapy dogs are not service dogs

A registered therapy team visits facilities as a volunteer and gains no public access rights. That is a different category from working animals, which we cover in our service dog and ESA letter cost guide. Registries also differ from breed papers: AKC registration fees record parentage, not behavior.

Questions to ask before paying

  • Is the course the $80 online version or a workshop with its own price?
  • What does this evaluation event charge, and is it per team?
  • Do I qualify for the discounted registration or an additional-animal rate?

This article covers costs only and is not veterinary advice. Fees come from the Pet Partners fees page at petpartners.org and may change; confirm current prices before you pay.
