How Much Does AKC Registration Cost? The $44.99 Online Fee, the $36 and $66 Late Fees, and What the Papers Don't Prove

A breeder hands over a puppy and says, "You'll want to register with the AKC." The fee schedule then shows a dozen price points. This guide uses the American Kennel Club's own published fees and its own statements about what registration means.

The base price: $44.99 online, $47.99 on paper

For an individual dog, the AKC lists basic registration at $44.99 online and $47.99 on paper, which includes the paper application fee. Online upgrades are Silver at $61.99, Gold at $81.99 and Platinum at $99.00. A prepaid basic registration is listed at $25.00.

Paper add-ons

On paper, basic registration plus a pedigree is $72.99, plus an export pedigree is $93.99, and plus AKC Reunite (the microchip recovery service) is $64.99. For the implant itself, here is what microchipping runs.

The late fees: $36 and $66

Paper and online applications both add $36.00 when filed more than 12 months after the litter was registered, and $66.00 after 24 months. A dog registered online two years late would cost $44.99 plus $66.00, or $110.99.

What the breeder pays first

A puppy can be registered only if its litter was. The AKC describes litters bred in the USA from a registered female and male of the same breed. Standard litter registration is $49.99, and a litter filed over six months after birth carries a $65.00 penalty. That is a small slice of the price gap in our breeder pricing breakdown.

Buying or rehoming a registered dog

Transferring ownership is $37.50 online or $38.50 on paper. A duplicate certificate is $20.00 and a corrected one $25.00. A certified four-generation pedigree is $36.00. A kennel name costs $150 per breed for each five-year period, which concerns only breeders.

What the papers do not prove

The AKC states that registration, in itself, does not guarantee the quality of health of a dog, and that it does not license or endorse anyone selling purebred dogs. Registration records parentage. It is not a health certificate.

Mixed breeds and shelter dogs

The AKC Canine Partners program covers mixed breeds, with events such as agility, obedience and rally once the dog is spayed or neutered. The page I checked showed no fee, so confirm it at checkout. Compare that with adoption fees, which usually bundle surgery and vaccines.

Questions to ask before paying

  • Is the litter registered, and who pays the individual registration?
  • Is the quote the online price or an upgraded tier?
  • Would a late fee apply based on the litter date?

This article covers costs only and is not veterinary advice. Fees come from the AKC fee schedule at akc.org and may change; confirm current prices before you pay.
