How Much Does Dog Training Cost? PetSmart's $149 Class, the Package Math, and What a Private Lesson Adds
A group dog class looks like a flat $149 until you add the package math, required vaccines, and private sessions. Here is PetSmart's published price ladder, what Petco lists, and how to compare an independent trainer.
One group class at PetSmart
PetSmart lists every core course at $149 for 6 weeks: Puppy (10 weeks to 5 months), Beginner (5 months and up), Intermediate, and Advanced. That is about $24.83 a week, and each level requires the one before it, so a trained dog costs the whole ladder.
Packages: where the discount is real
Fundamental (Puppy or Beginner plus Intermediate, 12 weeks) is $249 against $298 separately, saving $49. Premium (three levels, 18 weeks) is $355 against $447, saving $92, about 21%. Private sessions and the 4-pack
PetSmart lists $45 for 30 minutes, $89 for one hour, and $259 for four one-hour sessions. The 4-pack is $64.75 an hour versus $356 for four single hours, a $97 saving of roughly 27%.
What Petco lists
Petco's training pages list group classes starting at $149 and a $39 Private Lesson 101. Confirm prices with your store.
What the fee does not include
PetSmart says you bring your own vaccination records, leash, collar or harness, and treats. Groups are typically 4 to 6 dogs, with a retake within 90 days if you are not satisfied. Its Training Camp ($45 to $239) is for PetsHotel guests only; budget it with boarding costs.
Vaccine records are a hidden line item
PetSmart requires DPP and rabies vaccines, age appropriate; Petco requires parvovirus, hepatitis and distemper, plus rabies at 16 weeks or older. The American Veterinary Society of Animal Behavior says puppies can start socialization classes at 7 to 8 weeks with at least one set of vaccines 7 days earlier.
Comparing an independent trainer
The Certification Council for Professional Dog Trainers says the industry is "unregulated with no licensing requirements or regulatory oversight," and that CPDT-KA means passing an exam plus at least 300 hours of experience. Get per-session price, session count, class size, and refund terms in writing, then divide by total hours to compare.
