How Much Does Wound Repair Cost for a Dog or Cat? $150 at a Nonprofit Clinic, $180 to $725 by Wound Size, and $626 to $898 in Denver Flat Fees

A torn paw pad, a gash from a fence or an abscess from a cat fight all end the same way at the front desk: someone hands you an estimate with a wide range. Published price lists show why, because clinics bundle the same work in very different ways. This guide uses fee pages from four clinics, plus one New Jersey nonprofit's exam fees, to show what wound and abscess repair costs and which line items change the total.

The lowest published price is $150, and it is a starting point

Emancipet, a nonprofit in Texas, lists wound and abscess treatment and laceration repair "starting at $150" on its surgery page. Its general surgeries run $350 to $650, and a pre-surgical consultation costs $20.
The page says the list does not cover every procedure and that appointments are required for surgery. So $150 plus the $20 consultation is the floor for a simple case, not a promise for any wound.

One Richmond clinic prices by wound length

Helping Hands Veterinary Surgery & Dentistry in Richmond, Virginia, sorts wound repair by size: $180 for a wound under 1 inch, $325 for 1 to 3 inches, $525 for 3 to 5 inches and $725 and up beyond 5 inches.
Each price includes anesthesia or sedation and any take-home medication the veterinarians consider necessary, including antibiotics, pain medication and fluids. The same price list names possible extra charges: $105 for bloodwork, $175 for a first biopsy, $19 for an e-collar and a $175 same-day appointment fee.

A Denver clinic sells a flat bundle by weight

Clarity Vet in Denver quotes one fee that covers pre-operative bloodwork, anesthesia, monitoring, pain management, surgical materials, the procedure, take-home medication including antibiotics and an e-collar. Laceration repair is $852 for a cat, $898 for a dog up to 60 pounds, $1,032 for 60 to 100 pounds and $1,117 above 100 pounds.
For bite abscess treatment the same clinic lists $626 for a cat, $665, $749 and $825 for the three dog weight bands. The clinic notes that larger dogs need more anesthesia, medication, materials and surgical time.

A Fort Collins surgery center gives ranges

Animal Works in Fort Collins, Colorado, lists a cat bite abscess at $600 to $1,000 for complex cases and laceration or wound repair at $500 to $2,000, depending on complexity, size, number of wounds and location. A firmer quote comes on arrival.
Optional items on its page include a $120 pre-anesthetic bloodwork profile, which it requires for pets 5 and older, $35 for IV fluids and $15 to $25 for post-operative pain medication. The clinic also warns that emergency cases carry extra emergency fees on top of the surgery price.

Why the same wound costs $170 or $900

Three things move the price: where the clinic sits on the nonprofit-to-private spectrum, whether the quote is bundled or itemized, and how complicated the wound is. A medium wound in Richmond could come to $325 for repair plus $105 bloodwork and $19 for the cone, or $449, before any same-day fee. The same case with the $175 fee would be $624.
That arithmetic uses published line items and is not a quote. Denver's $852 flat fee for a cat laceration already contains the bloodwork and the cone, so the two prices are closer than the headline numbers suggest.
The veterinarian decides whether a wound needs sedation, sutures or a drain, and that decision sets the tier.

Ask for an itemized estimate

Ask three things before you agree: does the price include anesthesia and take-home medication, is bloodwork required or optional for your pet's age, and is there an emergency or same-day fee. Pura Vida Animal Rescue in Ringoes, New Jersey, lists a $50 pre-surgical exam and says that exam must come before any procedure or estimate, so the exam may be a separate first charge.
Our guides on emergency vet visit costs and vet exam fees explain those first charges. Related surgeries are priced in our posts on ear hematoma surgery and lump removal.

Check before you book

These figures come from clinic pages we read on October 26, 2026. Prices change and vary by region, so confirm every fee with the clinic. We could not find a published wound or abscess price at Pura Vida, so we cite only its exam fee.
