Does Homeowners or Renters Insurance Cover a Dog Bite? The $65,450 Average Claim, the $100,000 Limit, and What an Umbrella Policy Adds

A dog bite is not a vet bill, yet it can be the largest cost a dog owner ever faces. The money goes to the person who was hurt, and your homeowners or renters policy decides how much of it you pay yourself.

What a dog-injury claim costs insurers

Triple-I and State Farm track dog-injury liability claims.

YearClaimsAverage cost per claim
202422,658$69,272
202528,450$65,450

Insurers paid about $1.86 billion in 2025. The average fell 5.5% but is up 97% since 2016. New York had the highest average at $92,154.

Where a typical limit runs out

Dog-bite liability sits inside the personal liability part of a homeowners or renters policy. Triple-I says limits are typically $100,000 to $300,000, and the owner pays anything above the limit. The 2025 average of $65,450 uses about two-thirds of a $100,000 limit, and New York's average uses more than 90%.

Medical payments is a smaller line

Many policies add "medical payments to others," commonly $1,000 to $5,000, for minor guest injuries. It will not cover a serious one.

Special limits and breed exclusions

Read the dog wording, not just the headline limit. Dog Bite Law cites a tenant with a $500,000 personal-injury limit who did not know of a separate $50,000 limit for injuries her dog caused.

Some insurers exclude breeds such as pit bulls, Rottweilers, German Shepherds or Akitas, or charge more for them. Ask for the list in writing before you adopt. The same breed question shapes pet insurance premiums.

What happens to your policy after a claim

A paid claim can raise your premium, lead the insurer to exclude the dog, or end in non-renewal. No reliable dollar figure is published, so ask your agent.

What an umbrella policy adds

An umbrella policy adds liability coverage in $1 million increments. A $1 million policy is often quoted at $150 to $300 a year. Insurers commonly require about $300,000 on the underlying policy, and some will not write one if your dog is excluded.

Questions to ask your agent

  • What is my liability limit, and is there a special limit for dogs?
  • Is my dog's breed or mix excluded?
  • Would one claim change my renewal?

Pet policies work differently. A bite claim is a liability matter, while your dog's own care is covered by pet insurance, and our guide to denied-claim appeals covers that side. Classes can lower risk; the dog training cost breakdown shows what they run.
