How Much Does It Cost to Cancel a Vet Wellness Plan? Banfield's 'Lesser Of' Rule and the Break-Even Math Before You Sign
A vet wellness plan looks like a subscription, but legally it is closer to a 12-month contract. Here is how Banfield's Optimum Wellness Plan works, what its cancellation rule says, and the break-even math to run before you enroll.
What the plan is, and is not
Banfield describes these as annual plans that spread preventive care over 12 equal monthly payments, bundling exams, vaccinations, diagnostic testing and "unlimited office visits." The tiers by life stage
Puppy plans are Early Care and Early Care Plus, and only Plus includes spay or neuter surgery. Microchipping and a DNA test are add-ons. Adult and senior cat "Plus" tiers add a dental cleaning. The plan pages publish no dollar price, so your clinic's quote is the first number to write down.
The cancellation rule
The agreement says a member who cancels "for any reason (including but not limited to death or loss of pet or transfer of ownership)" can still owe money. Banfield told CBS News Texas the client owes the lesser of (1) the retail value of services and discounts already provided, minus payments made, or (2) the remaining monthly payments.
Two cases
A 2023 FOX 35 Orlando report told of a family whose boxer was euthanized in May and who were told about seven more payments were due. CBS News Texas reported a 15-year-old dachshund that died a week after a November 29 renewal; Banfield said about $1,100 in services were given that final week, so the owner faced that figure or a balance just over $1,000. The Texas Department of Insurance advises reading contract terms first.
Break-even math
Take a hypothetical $50 a month plan, $600 a year. Cancel after four payments ($200) having used $450 of services at retail: rule one gives $250 owed, rule two $400, so you pay $250. Early use of retail-priced services shrinks your exit; unused months still count.
Where the 30% savings applies

Renewal and exit checklist
