How Much Does It Cost to Reclaim a Lost Dog From the Shelter? Fees From $20 to $100, Plus Boarding, Rabies and Microchip Charges

When a dog slips its collar and ends up at the county shelter, the bill starts before you reach the front desk. Shelters charge to hand a pet back, and most layer on boarding, a rabies shot and a microchip. This guide compares four public fee schedules to show how wide the range is and which line items drive the total.

Reclaim fees are set locally, so there is no national price

Impound and reclaim charges come from city or county ordinance or the shelter's own schedule. That is why one owner pays $20 and another pays $100 for the same stray hold. The four schedules below are from Longview, Texas; Athens-Clarke County, Georgia; Frederick County, Maryland; and Chilton County, Alabama. Your own shelter may look different, so use these as a map of what to ask.

Longview, Texas: $100 first reclaim, microchip included

The Longview Animal Care and Adoption Center lists reclaim fees that rise with repeat visits: $100 the first time, $125 the second and $135 the third. The microchip implant is included in that fee. The owner needs proof of rabies vaccination, or a $5 shelter vaccination charge applies. Boarding is $10 a day after the 72-hour stray hold. A first-time owner who shows rabies paperwork and picks up within the hold pays $100, and one without paperwork pays $105 (my arithmetic).

Athens-Clarke County, Georgia: $25 to $100, with a spay/neuter rule

Athens-Clarke posts a fee that depends on whether the pet is fixed. For an altered animal the reclaim fee is $25 the first time, $30 the second and $35 the third or later. For an unaltered animal it is $50, $75 and $100. Boarding is $5 a day, a microchip is $7 and a rabies vaccine is $15. The county says an animal that is not spayed or neutered must be altered at the owner's expense on the second impound, and it offers a free spay/neuter on the first.

For a fixed dog with no chip and no current rabies shot, three days at the shelter comes to $25 + $15 + $7 + $15 = $62 (my arithmetic).

Frederick County, Maryland: $20 impound plus $10 a day

Frederick County's reclaim sheet lists an impound fee of $20, or $50 for a second or later impoundment within six months. Boarding is $10 per day or part of a day, counting the day of intake. A $30 rabies voucher applies if the pet is unvaccinated, and every pet returned to its owner must leave microchipped, at $15. Stray animals are held five calendar days. The sheet is dated 7/15/22, so confirm the numbers before you go.

A first-time, unvaccinated, unchipped dog held three days would total $20 + $30 + $30 + $15 = $95 (my arithmetic).

Chilton County, Alabama: a fee that climbs by the day

Chilton County's shelter posts a different structure: $25 for day one, $30 for day two, $35 for day three, rising $5 a day to $55 for day seven. The shelter says there is no discount for multiple dogs, so each animal is charged separately. This schedule rewards the owner who comes in fast.

What drives the total

  • Speed: boarding runs $5 to $10 a day in three of the four, and Chilton's escalating schedule penalizes delay.
  • Repeat visits: Longview, Athens-Clarke and Frederick all charge more the second time.
  • Spay/neuter status: Athens-Clarke charges unaltered pets twice the altered rate or more.
  • Missing paperwork: an unvaccinated or unchipped pet adds $20 to $60 here.

How to keep the bill small

Registered chips and current tags are the cheapest insurance against this charge, because a pet that is identified at intake can often go straight home. Our guide to what microchipping really costs explains the registry fee that people forget. Keep a current license too: county dog license fees are usually lower than a single reclaim. Cat owners can read the same comparison for cat licenses.

Questions to ask the shelter

  • What is the reclaim fee, and does it change if this is a repeat visit?
  • Is boarding charged per day or per part of a day, and does it include the intake date?
  • Will I be charged for a rabies vaccine and a microchip if my pet lacks them?
  • What proof of ownership do you accept, and when can I reclaim?
