How Much Does a Low-Cost Rabies Vaccine Clinic Charge? $10 in Orange County NC and Loudoun, $15 in Washoe, $20 in Fairfax

A rabies shot at a private clinic usually arrives bundled with an exam fee. A county-run vaccine clinic skips most of that, and the published prices are strikingly low. This guide compares what four county animal services programs list on their own pages: Orange County (North Carolina), Loudoun County (Virginia), Fairfax County (Virginia) and Washoe County (Nevada).

What a public rabies clinic actually is

These are short, scheduled sessions run by a county animal services department, often in a shelter parking lot or a park. They offer a small menu: rabies, one or two core vaccines, and sometimes a microchip. They do not replace a full veterinary exam, and Fairfax County states that only limited exams are provided at its clinics. What you buy is a vaccination and a certificate, not a check-up.

Orange County, North Carolina: $10 rabies, $35 microchip

Orange County Animal Services lists rabies vaccines at $10 and microchips at $35 at its 2026 clinics. Clinics typically offer both 1-year and 3-year vaccinations for $10, but the 3-year dose requires a previous rabies certificate in hand; a tag alone is not enough. Owners can choose only the vaccine, only the microchip, or both. Several clinics also offer free DA2PPV and FVRCP vaccines for dogs and cats. Attendance is not limited to county residents, and cash and credit cards are accepted.

Loudoun County, Virginia: $10 across the board

Loudoun County Animal Services prices the rabies vaccine for cats and dogs at $10, the DHPP vaccine for dogs at $10 and the FVRCP vaccine for cats at $10. Microchips are $15, and free for Loudoun County residents. A dog license, which the county requires, is listed at $10 a year. The county asks owners to limit visits to four pets per family per clinic and to bring proof of prior vaccination to receive the three-year vaccine.

Fairfax County, Virginia: $20 per vaccine

Fairfax County Animal Services lists rabies vaccination at $20, DHPPi for dogs at $20, FVRCP for cats at $20 and a microchip at $20. A dog license is $10. Dogs must be on fixed, non-extendable leashes and cats must arrive in secure carriers. The page shows a flat price per item rather than a bundle, so a dog that needs both rabies and DHPPi pays $40.

Washoe County, Nevada: $15 rabies, free core vaccine

Washoe County Regional Animal Services runs a monthly clinic on the first Wednesday from 3:00 to 7:00 pm, by appointment. It lists rabies at $15, the DA2PPV or FVRCP core vaccine as free thanks to Petco Love, Bordetella at $15 and de-worming at $10. Microchipping is free for Washoe County residents and $31 for non-residents. A $10 deposit secures the appointment and counts toward the total, but no-shows forfeit it. The same page lists dog licenses at $16 for one year for an altered dog and $30 for an unaltered dog.

The same pet, four bills

For a dog or cat that needs a rabies shot and its core combination vaccine, the listed totals are $10 in Orange County at the clinics that include the free vaccine, $20 in Loudoun, $40 in Fairfax and $15 in Washoe. Adding a microchip brings a resident's total to $20 in Loudoun (the chip is free) and $15 in Washoe, while a Fairfax visit with a chip comes to $60 and a Washoe non-resident pays $46 for rabies plus a chip. The spread is a function of local budgets and sponsors, not of the vaccine itself.

What the low price does not cover

A clinic certificate does not include a physical exam, and a pet that is sick or on medication should see a veterinarian first. Prices apply to the dates and locations listed, and some counties restrict services to residents. If you need a titer test for international or Hawaii travel instead of a routine booster, the rabies titer cost guide explains that separate bill. For a comparison with private clinic pricing, see dog vaccination prices shot by shot and the core and non-core schedule.

Most counties will not issue a dog license without proof of a current rabies vaccination, so a clinic visit often comes before the license fee. The dog license comparison shows what altered and unaltered dogs pay. If you add a chip, the microchip guide covers the separate registry fee.

Questions to ask before you go

  • Is the clinic open to non-residents, and do I need proof of residency?
  • Do I need an appointment, and is a deposit required?
  • Will the clinic give a 3-year vaccine, and what proof of prior vaccination does it want?
  • Are cash and cards both accepted?

This article covers costs only and is not veterinary advice. Prices come from the Orange County NC, Loudoun County VA, Fairfax County VA and Washoe County NV animal services pages named above and may change; confirm current prices and dates with your own county before you go.
